The Feeding of the Five Thousand
1. After these things Jesus went away across the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias.
2. And a great crowd was following Him, because they were seeing the signs that He was doing upon the sick.
3. And Jesus went up into the mountain, and He sat there with His disciples.
4. Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near.
5. Therefore Jesus, lifting up His eyes and seeing that a great crowd is coming toward Him, says to Philip, “From where shall we buy bread so that these might eat.”
6. But this He was saying to test him, for He Himself knew what He was about to do.
7. Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, so that each might receive a little.”
8. One of His disciples, Andrew the brother of Simon Peter, said to Him,
9. “A little boy is here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are these for so many.”
10. Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. Therefore the men sat down, about five thousand in number.
11. Jesus then took the loaves, and having given thanks, He distributed to those sitting down, likewise also of the fish, as much as they desired.
12. And when they were filled He says to His disciples, “Gather together the remaining fragments, so that nothing may be lost.”
13. Therefore they gathered, and they filled twelve baskets of fragments from the five barley loaves which were left over to those who had eaten.
14. Then the people, having seen the sign that He did, were saying, “This is truly the prophet who is coming into the world.”
15. Therefore Jesus, knowing that they were about to come and seize Him so that they might make Him king, withdrew again into the mountain, Himself alone.
Jesus Walks on the Sea
16. And when evening came His disciples went down to the sea.
17. And having embarked into a boat, they were going across the sea to Capernaum, and darkness had already set in, and Jesus had not yet come to them.
18. And the sea was stirred up because a great wind was blowing.
19. Therefore having rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they behold Jesus walking upon the sea and coming near the boat, and they were afraid.
20. But He says to them, “It is I; do not fear.”
21. Then they were willing to receive Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.
The Bread of Life Discourse
22. On the next day the crowd that had stood across the sea saw that there had been only one boat, and that Jesus had not entered with His disciples into the boat, but that His disciples went away alone.
23. But boats came from Tiberias near the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks.
24. Therefore when the crowd saw that Jesus is not there, nor His disciples, they themselves entered into the boats and came to Capernaum seeking Jesus.
25. And having found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You come here.”
26. Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.”
27. “Work not for the food that perishes, but for the food that remains unto eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for God the Father has set His seal upon Him.”
28. Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do so that we may work the works of God.”
29. Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”
30. Therefore they said to Him, “What sign, then, do You do, that we might see and believe You; what do You work.”
31. “Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, just as it is written, ‘Bread out of heaven He gave to them to eat.’ ”
32. Therefore Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, Moses has not given you the bread out of heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread out of heaven.”
33. “For the bread of God is the One coming down out of heaven and giving life to the world.”
34. Therefore they said to Him, “Lord, always give to us this bread.”
35. Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; the one coming to Me shall never hunger, and the one believing in Me shall never thirst.”
36. “But I said to you that indeed you have seen Me, and you do not believe.”
37. “All that the Father gives to Me will come to Me, and the one coming to Me I will certainly not cast out.”
38. “For I have come down from heaven, not so that I might do My will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”
39. “And this is the will of the One who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I may lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day.”
40. “For this is the will of My Father, that everyone seeing the Son and believing in Him may have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him on the last day.”
Murmuring Among the Jews
41. Therefore the Jews were murmuring about Him because He said, “I am the bread having come down out of heaven.”
42. And they were saying, “Is not this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know; how then does He say, ‘I have come down out of heaven.’ ”
43. Jesus answered and said to them, “Do not murmur among yourselves.”
44. “No one is able to come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up on the last day.”
45. “It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught of God.’ Everyone who has heard from the Father and learned comes to Me.”
46. “Not that anyone has seen the Father except the One being from God; this One has seen the Father.”
47. “Truly, truly I say to you, the one believing has eternal life.”
48. “I am the bread of life.”
49. “Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.”
50. “This is the bread coming down out of heaven, so that anyone may eat of it and not die.”
51. “I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he shall live forever, and indeed the bread that I will give is My flesh, for the life of the world.”
Conflict Over Jesus’ Words
52. Therefore the Jews were arguing with one another, saying, “How is this man able to give us His flesh to eat.”
53. Therefore Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you do not have life in yourselves.”
54. “The one eating My flesh and drinking My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”
55. “For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink.”
56. “The one eating My flesh and drinking My blood abides in Me, and I in him.”
57. “Just as the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so also the one eating Me, that one also will live because of Me.”
58. “This is the bread that came down out of heaven, not as the fathers ate and died; the one eating this bread will live forever.”
59. He said these things in the synagogue, teaching in Capernaum.
Many Disciples Turn Away
60. Therefore many of His disciples, having heard, said, “This word is hard; who is able to listen to it.”
61. And Jesus, knowing in Himself that His disciples were murmuring concerning this, said to them, “Does this offend you.”
62. “Then what if you should behold the Son of Man ascending to where He was before.”
63. “The Spirit is the One giving life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.”
64. But there are some of you who do not believe. For Jesus knew from the beginning who were the ones not believing, and who was the one who would betray Him.
65. And He was saying, “For this reason I have said to you that no one is able to come to Me unless it has been granted to him by the Father.”
66. From this many of His disciples went back and no longer walked with Him.
67. Therefore Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also wish to go.”
68. Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go; You have words of eternal life.”
69. “And we have believed and come to know that You are the Holy One of God.”
70. Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil.”
71. Now He was speaking of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for this one, one of the twelve, was about to betray Him.
