The Gerasene Demoniac
1. And they came to the other side of the sea, into the region of the Gerasenes.
2. And when he had stepped out of the boat, immediately a man from the tombs with an unclean spirit met him.
3. Who had his dwelling among the tombs, and no one was able any longer to bind him, even with chains.
4. Because he had often been bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the fetters shattered, and no one was strong enough to subdue him.
5. And continually, night and day, among the tombs and in the mountains he was crying out and cutting himself with stones.
6. And seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran and bowed down before him, and worshipped him.
7. And crying out with a loud voice he said, “What to me and to you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.”
8. For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, unclean spirit.”
9. And he asked him, “What is your name?” And he says to him, “Legion is my name, because we are many.”
10. And he begged him greatly not to send them out of the region.
11. Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside.
12. And they begged him, saying, “Send us into the pigs, so that we may enter into them.”
13. And he permitted them. And the unclean spirits came out and entered into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand, and they drowned in the sea.
14. And those feeding them fled and reported it in the city and in the countryside, and they came to see what had happened.
15. And they come to Jesus and see the demon-possessed man sitting, clothed, and in his right mind, the one who had had the legion, and they were afraid.
16. And those who had seen it described to them how it happened to the demon-possessed man and about the pigs.
17. And they began to beg him to depart from their region.
18. And as he was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged him that he might be with him.
19. And he did not allow him, but says to him, “Go to your home, to your friends, and report to them what the Lord has done for you and how he had mercy on you.”
20. And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis what Jesus had done for him, and all were amazed.
The Healing of the Woman and the Raising of Jairus’s Daughter
21. And when Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered around him, and he was beside the sea.
22. And one of the rulers of the synagogue comes, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he falls at his feet.
23. And he begged him greatly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death; come, lay your hands on her so that she may be saved and live.”
24. And he went with him, and a great crowd was following him and pressing in on him.
25. And a woman, being in a flow of blood for twelve years.
26. And having suffered many things under many physicians and having spent all that she had, and it had benefited nothing, but rather she had become worse.
27. Hearing about Jesus, she came in the crowd from behind and touched his garment.
28. For she was saying, “If I may touch even his garment, I will be made well.”
29. And immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she knew in her body that she had been healed from the affliction.
30. And immediately Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?”
31. And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing in on you, and you say, ‘Who touched me?’”
32. And he looked around to see the one who had done this.
33. And the woman, frightened and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell before him and told him the whole truth.
34. And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace and be healed from your affliction.”
35. While he was still speaking, some come from the synagogue ruler’s house, saying, “Your daughter has died; why still trouble the teacher?”
36. But Jesus, ignoring the word spoken, says to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear; only believe.”
37. And he did not allow anyone to follow with him except Peter and James and John the brother of James.
38. And they come to the house of the synagogue ruler, and he sees a commotion and people weeping and wailing loudly.
39. And entering, he says to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child has not died but is sleeping.”
40. And they were laughing at him. But throwing them all out, he takes the father of the child and the mother and those with him and enters where the child was.
41. And taking hold of the child’s hand, he says to her, “Talitha koum,” which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.”
42. And immediately the little girl stood up and walked, for she was twelve years old, and they were amazed with great amazement.
43. And he ordered them strictly that no one should know this, and he said that she should be given something to eat.
